Reason One Whakarewarewa - The Thermal Village is where family members took survivors of the eruption as they endeavoured to rebuild their lives. With the demise of the Pink and White Terraces, the Whakarewarewa's Village became a showcase for the geothermal wonders of the district.
The people of Tuhourangi / Ngati Wahiao are the guardians of Whakarewarewa's spectacular geothermal activity, pools of boiling water and bubbling mud. Reason Two An evening meal at Mitai will give you an authentic introduction to Maori culture leaving you amazed and in awe. Enter the world of Mitai.
Be enthralled by the natural bush setting, see warriors in traditional dress paddle an ancient warrior canoes (waka) down the wai O whiro stream and don't miss your only opportunity in Rotorua are to see glow worms in their natural habitat. Reason Three The Tarawera eruption destroyed the village of Te Wairoa, the Pink and White Terraces and with it the birthplace of tourism in New Zealand.
Te Wairoa was the point of departure and return for visitors to the famed Terraces/ The Tuhourangi people who owned the Terraces lived in the village; they were hosts, guides and entertainers to hundreds of tourists who visited every year.
Reason Four

Ater the destruction of the Pink and White Terraces in the eruption of Mt Tarawera in 1886, Wai O Tapu became known at the New "Wonderland" due to the presence of the "Primrose Terrace" the largest silica terrace in the Sourthern Hemisphere. Lady Knox's geyser named after the late lady Constance Knox (15th Governor of New Zealand) erupts daily at 10:15am reaching heights of up to 20 metres and can continue to erupt up to one hour. |
